Notes:
Use the links below to enter the review
sections. Some machines have been given the full review treatment.
We then have small "mini-reviews" of most other commonly available
machines, along with reviews of probes and headphones.
Each manufacturer now has a section of reviews, so just click
on the make that interests you, to see if we have an opinion on
that make and model.
The key to the listings in the "mini-reviews" is as follows:
ERG - ergonomics - ease of use, set out of controls, etc.
BQ - build quality.
WB - weight and balance.
DP - the depth potential of the machine - bare in mind that this
varies with the amount of mineralisation in your soil.
ID - iron discrimination abilities.
RR - recovery rate of the detector - faster rates lead to less
masking.
AR - score for use on arable land - an average of stubble and
freshly cultivated values.
PG - score for use on pasture and other grassed areas.
BH - score for beach use - an average of dry and wet sand use.
AC - accessory coil availability.
Coil listing: C = concentric / WS = 2D
wide-scan.
The ratings are basically a mark out of 10, which equate with
the following descriptions:
1 - poor.
3 - worse than average.
5 - average.
7 - good.
10 - excellent.
