Cost effective magging.....

- Magging?
- Is:
- Using powerful magnets to search for iron relics in watercourses.

Using a powerful magnet, it is possible to find various relics in rivers, streams and other areas. This can be a very worthwhile, additional, hobby to metal detecting.

Some magnets, such as the 'Powerlift' and the 'Supamag' are available, but are not easy to get hold of. Therefore, I decided to see if other options were available - hence this article.

First job - get hold of a strong magnet or two. You require one or two medium sized, strong, neodynium rare earth magnets. Some excellent examples are readily available on the Web at: www.wondermagnets.com.

The magnet pictured above works out at approx £13, and is delivered quickly.

In the example ploe assembly I show here, I have used 2 of these magnets, pole to pole, to increase strength. The resulting assembly will readily lift a spade by it's edge.

Second job - a pole assembly. I used a readily available telescopic extension lance from B & Q.

The other materials have been put together from various bits and pieces in my garage. Total cost? approx £40
